Cylinders

There are plenty of lock types on the market today, but one of the most common – and most familiar for many people – is the cylinder lock. This is also referred to as a pin tumbler lock. All you will see on the exterior of the door is the key hole. The surround is circular, and is the end of the entire cylinder. Most of it will be contained within the door.

The idea with a cylinder lock is that it can only be opened if the correct key is used. No doubt you’ve chosen the wrong key by accident to try and open your door in the past. Oftentimes, the key won’t go into the lock at all, or it will only go in partway. You won’t be able to turn it. That’s because the key must interact correctly with the pins inside the lock for it to turn and open the door.

This type of cylinder lock is also often referred to as a Yale lock. Yale is one of the leading companies producing these locks, and they are of a high standard to prevent criminals from getting past the pins to unlock the door without the key.

All Yale cylinders meet the British Standard kitemark requirements for security. This alone gives you peace of mind that your lock will be safe and will withstand attempts by anyone to get in. It’s also possible to get a rim cylinder lock. This is designed to work on external timber doors rather than on uPVC or composite doors. The latter requires a Euro profile lock, also produced by Yale.
